The University of Michigan Police Department (UMPD), along with other agencies across Michigan, will be participating in an enhanced enforcement campaign for impaired driving July 1-14. The ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ campaign seeks to protect the lives of residents in their communities by discouraging impaired driving and increasing law enforcement visibility during potentially high-risk times, like the Fourth of July holiday.
“Participating in this enforcement campaign is an opportunity to educate our community about the dangers of impaired driving,” said UMPD Chief Neumann. “Whether it’s a holiday weekend or any day of the year, there is never an excuse for driving impaired. We want our community to understand the importance of planning ahead by choosing a designated driver or another safe way home before they go out.”
In Michigan, it is illegal to drive with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 or higher; however, officers can arrest drivers at any blood alcohol content (BAC) level if they are believed to be impaired. It is also illegal to drive while impaired by controlled substances, including marijuana.
