Hockey season is underway, which means that thousands of fans will be packing into Yost Arena to cheer on the Wolverines each weekend. We at DPSS want all fans to have a good experience, we also want them to be safe while doing so. Check out the following FAQs to make sure you’re prepared before you get to the arena to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience at Yost.
Who should I contact if I need medical help?
First aid teams will be stationed throughout the arena during hockey games. If you or someone else needs medical help, contact one of the teams or an event staff member.
In the case of a major medical incident, you can also contact DPSS by calling (734) 763-1131.
In case of emergencies, what should I do?
Directions to guests and staff will be communicated during times of emergency via public address announcements and video scoreboard messages. Guests are requested to listen to announcements and remain seated unless otherwise instructed.
In the case of building emergencies or fires, Event Team Members and law enforcement personnel may direct actions to protect all of the guests, including evacuations. In these situations, it is important for your safety and the safety of others to remain calm, listen to all instructions carefully, and evacuate calmly. Please do not run or panic during evacuation procedures.
In the event of an emergency occurring outside of the stadium, a shelter-in-place order may be given. The shelter-in-place will remain in effect until it is determined that the emergency situation is no longer an issue.
What is the alcohol policy at Yost Arena?
Alcohol sales will begin at select locations throughout the arena one hour before the start of the game until the start of the third period. Identification is required to purchase alcoholic beverages.
The University of Michigan wants to remind all game attendees to consume alcohol safely and in moderation, not drive after drinking, and to utilize university resources such as Safe Ride and the Stay in the Blue app.
If one of my friends or I have drank too much, what should I do?
If you are concerned about your friend’s health and safety due to alcohol, call 911 immediately. If your friend is still responsive, you can help them sit up comfortably and give them water to drink.
There will also be medical stations throughout the arena. If you need assistance, contact a member of the event staff.
What do I do if someone I’m with or a child is separated from my group?
Before the game starts, it's a good idea to agree on a designated meeting spot with your group in case anyone gets separated. Common meeting points could include gates, sections, or nearby landmarks.
If you cannot reach them using a cell phone, you can always contact a member of the stadium staff or a security team member or go to the Guest Services Booth for assistance.
If a child gets lost, the parent/guardian should report it to the nearest Police Officer or Event Team Member as soon as possible.
What if I see someone doing something illegal or suspicious at the arena?
Even if you’re unsure of what is happening, the best thing to do is report it to event security or other staff. You may help prevent violence or theft.
Suspicious behavior or activity can be any action that is out of place and does not fit into the usual day-to-day activity of our campus community. If you witness behavior that concerns you, trust your instincts and call 911 or DPSS at (734) 763-1131.
At DPSS, the safety and security of all of our guests and the entire campus community is our number one priority. If you have any other questions about safety at Yost Arena, click here.
