DPSS wraps up annual training

Law enforcement response to individuals living with a mental illness training presentation

Each year, the Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) staff come together to participate in a variety of training sessions designed to prepare staff to provide the best possible service to the U-M community. While training is ongoing throughout the year for all departments, May is dedicated to division-wide training and updates, provided by other university units and external professionals.

Last month’s training covered a variety of required topics such as de-escalation, defense tactics, and legal updates, as well as additional important topics like cultural awareness, mental health crisis response, and interpersonal violence response.

“Continuous training is essential to upholding our mission, vision, and values,” said DPSS Executive Director Eddie L. Washington, Jr. “It is paramount that our staff are trained and educated with the most contemporary practices to build confidence, trust, and relationships to keep our community and themselves safe.”
