Spring is often seen as a time of new beginnings, signaling the end of frigid winter months. Many students plan a much-needed reprieve as the semester nears its end and for some, commencement approaches. Whether you’re traveling or staying nearby, please follow these safety tips over the break.

Strategies to Stay Safe While Drinking Alcohol

If you are planning to drink during spring break, below are reminders on how to do so responsibly:

  • The legal drinking age in the U.S. is 21. If you plan to travel outside of the U.S., be sure to find out the legal drinking age for your destination.
  • Never leave your drinks unattended.
  • Eat before and while drinking.

8 Travel Safety Tips to Know Before You Go

Going on a trip with friends, heading home to visit family, or taking an alternative spring break? Here are some important reminders before you leave:

  • Lock your doors and windows and close your blinds.
  • Register your international travel
  • Review international travel advisories before departing.
  • Prepare to arrive at least two hours before your scheduled flight departure. Popular travel seasons, like spring break, may lead to long check-in and TSA lines.
  • Utilize the Central Student Government’s AirBus to get to the airport.
  • Don’t leave items unattended at the airport or other public places.
  • Keep passports, boarding passes, and any other important travel documents secure, such as in a hotel room safe.
  • Are you driving? Adhere to speed limits, don’t text while driving, and be sure to have access to a map in case your GPS stops working.

Health Safety Reminders for Travelers

The end of February marks the end of flu season in Michigan, so it’s important to continue taking steps to stay safe. Be aware that the change in season often brings about allergy symptoms that may mimic flu and COVID-19 symptoms. Refer to U-M Health Response for more information.

Staying on campus? We are too!

Remember:

  • Some dining halls may be closed over spring break. To check the hours of operation, visit the dining website.
  • If you need assistance on campus, DPSS can be reached 24/7 at (734) 763-1131

If you see something, say something—report any criminal or suspicious behavior to law enforcement. The emergency number in the U.S. is 911. If you are traveling outside the U.S., know the emergency number for your destination as well.

Have a safe and restful spring break!
