Prevent Theft: Catalytic Converters

We’ve seen a recent increase in catalytic converter thefts in Ann Arbor, including on campus. Take these steps to help minimize your risk.

Prevention and protection tips:

  • VIN etching or stickers
  • Comprehensive insurance coverage
  • Install cameras
  • Park in a secure location whenever possible
  • Park in a well-lit area or close to a building entrance
  • Weld a cage or grate around the converter (average cost $300)

Theft of catalytic converters in the state of Michigan is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both. Scrap metal dealers may also be held responsible for the purchase of scrap metal known to have been stolen. It’s a felony punishable by up to five years in prison, a $5,000 fine, or both.
