To do before leaving campus for winter break

Dec. 16, 2016 – Before you leave campus for winter break, please remember the following:

Lock Up

Double-check that all windows and doors are closed and locked, also close blinds and curtains.

Keep valuables out of sight

If you can’t take your valuables with you, spend a few minutes putting away your most expensive items. Put high-end electronics in a drawer, for example, instead of just leaving them out on your desk.

Unplug Appliances

Unplugging electronics will prevent an electrical fire. It also can help save the planet and save you some money.

Keep heat on

Leave the heat on in your house or apartment, so the pipes do not freeze. Check with your management company or landlord on what temperature you should set your thermostat. At least 52 degrees fahrenheit is commonly recommended.

Avoid parking your car on the street

Try to avoid parking your car on the street, if you’re going to leave it in Ann Arbor during break. If the City declares a snow emergency, your car may be towed while you’re away. During a snow emergency, special parking restrictions may go into effect. Where street parking is normally permitted, restrictions would allow vehicles to be removed so city services and emergency vehicle access can be maintained. “Snow emergency” streets must be kept clear of parked cars at all times during the emergency. Vehicles left in place on these streets may be ticketed and towed. Residents will be alerted to a snow emergency via the city of Ann Arbor’s website,Facebook pageTwitter account and local media.

From all us at DPSS, have a safe and relaxing break. We look forward to seeing you in the new year!
