As news continues to unfold about the active shooter incident at Michigan State University, we mourn the tragic loss of life and offer our prayers for the other victims impacted by this heinous act. We send our condolences to the families, friends, and entire MSU community.
At the University of Michigan, we want to assure our students, faculty, staff, patients, and visitors that campus is safe. Out of an abundance of caution, DPSS is taking enhanced security measures, including deploying additional officers across all three U-M campuses and Michigan Medicine. We will continue to work closely with our local, state, and federal partners to ensure the safety of our campus while also supporting our colleagues at MSU.
If a similar emergency occurs on campus, we will issue a UM Emergency Alert. Students, faculty, and staff are automatically enrolled to receive UM Emergency Alerts via email and text message/SMS. Visit alerts.umich.edu to verify or update the mobile number currently registered in the system.
Our officers train regularly and are equipped to respond to active attackers. We provide training for students, faculty, and staff, including Run, Hide, or Fight — run if you can, hide if you can’t, and as a last resort, fight.
